The objects of the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (Cwlth) (FOI Act) are to give the Australian community broad access to information held by the Government by requiring agencies to proactively publish certain information and giving citizens a right of access to Government held documents. The Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) recognises that information held by the Government is to be regarded as a national resource and treated accordingly.

Part 2 of the FOI Act establishes an Information Publication Scheme (IPS) for Australian Government agencies subject to the FOI Act.
To the extent permitted by legislation, the AIC will promote a culture of appropriate proactive disclosure similar to that required by the IPS.
